Israeli self defence system

arrow What is Krav Maga?

Krav Maga, meaning in Hebrew “contact fight”, is the official system of self defence and hand to hand combat of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), the Israeli National Police and other security services. Krav Maga is also taught extensively in public schools and educational centres affiliated with the Israeli Ministry of Education.

Krav Maga is a modern, practical and proven system of self-defence, carefully conceived for today’s volatile world. It is characterized by a logical and coherent approach to self-defence and fighting confrontations that enables one to achieve a relatively high level of proficiency within a short period of instruction.Krav Maga was meticulously developed to be diversified, and thus is applicable to the military, law-enforcement agencies and civilians alike. The system has consistently earned the praise of experienced fighters, Martial Arts experts, and military and police officers for its highly practical applications, but in essence it also appeals to beginners because of its simple, no-nonsense and realistic approach to personal safety. In fact, Krav Maga is the ideal self-defence method for men, women, young and elderly people of all ages and physical abilities.
In examining the Krav-Maga discipline, there are two integral and interrelated components to it: self-defence and hand-to-hand combat (fighting confrontation).

After a long day of work, you are walking through the parking lot to your car. Just as you open the door someone approaches you from behind and puts a knife to your throat. You respond, swiftly and aggressively, defending yourself, controlling the weapon and neutralizing the attack. This is Krav Maga – self defence.

arrow History of Krav Maga

This highly effective system of self defence was originally developed by Imi Lichtenfeld.
Imi moved to Israel from Slovakia after the end of World War II. After the formation of Israel in 1948, Imi became the Chief Instructor of physical training and Krav Maga at the Israeli Defence Force’s (IDF) School of combat fitness. During this time he taught Krav Maga to the IDF’s most elite units including the Haganah, and the Special Commando units of the Palmack, and Palyam.
Upon retiring in 1964 from the IDF, Imi adapted the Krav Maga style for civilian use as a self defence system.

The most widely recognised organisation of Krav Maga is now the International Federation of Krav Maga (IKMF) and is headed by the world wide Chief Instructor Eyal Yanilov.
Eyal was taught directly by Imi and holds the highest grade ever awarded by the founder, Master level 3/Expert Level 8.

Today Krav Maga has been used by various Hollywood stars including; Jennifer Lopez in the film ‘enough’, Kristanna Loken in ‘Terminator 3’ and Angelina Jolie in ‘Tomb Raider’.
Krav Maga is also used by various law enforcement agencies, worldwide, including various SWAT teams, the FBI and is also the official Self Defence System of various military forces around the globe from Israel, Europe, South America, Australia, Japan and the United States. The UK is now following the rest of Europe and taking up Krav Maga.
